In its almost 5 centuries of existence, Cartagena de Indias, also known as the heroic or the stone corral, has played an important role in the cultural and economic development of the region. From its beginnings in colonial times, and thanks to the importance it gained for the Spanish, it began to develop gradually until it became one of the most important ports in America and today becomes a mandatory step for tourists from all over the world that visit the Colombian Caribbean.

Since the approach to the Rafael Núñez International Airport begins, you can start to see the Caribbean coast with its beautiful beaches and paradisal islands; and as the descent continues you can see how little by little this beautiful and welcoming city appears before your eyes.  Cartagena de Indias has a singular mixture of different architectural periods, passing through the colonial and republican to modern buildings and shopping centers.  This contrast in its architecture makes it a unique city of its kind.

It is enough to go through its narrow streets to immerse yourself in the energy of this magical city.  Its balconies decorated with flowers of a thousand colors, large wooden gates and stone facades, transport you in time allowing you to perceive and feel vividly the essence of a city that holds a lot of cultural and historical heritage.

I have always been a great admirer of Cartagena, not only for its historic buildings ranging from beautiful cathedrals, military forts, small and numerous churches, majestic houses dating back to yesteryear to its unmistakable and characteristic wall, but also for the joy and warmth with which locals always receive their own and foreigners making them feel at home and making this city a world-class tourist destination.  No matter how many times you visit Cartagena and explore its streets, there will always be something new to discover and to photograph.
