A door sometimes also called a portal when it refers to a main door in some way, is a complementary element in construction with very diverse applications, uses and locations, which is industrially manufactured in basic materials.  In the architectural space it serves to separate rooms, facilitating both their isolation and access between them.  Various types of hinge-type metal hardware are available, and may have complementary locks, padlocks, bolts, and slides.

For millennia the door has fulfilled an architectural and social function.  In the cities it represented a key element in its defense, in the houses it preserves us from inclement weather and also safeguards our privacy.  The door, being an opening that allows us to enter and exit, has always been considered a universal symbol that implies a transition from one place, one state or one level to another.  It is an access point to a different reality, superior or inferior: light and darkness, life and death, ignorance and wisdom, guilt and forgiveness, heaven and hell … The door always encourages us to travel, it ventures us to mystery.

From the colonial gates or doors of the houses, the collection of knockers draws attention, which more than utensils to knock on the doors are wonderful sculptures to announce the visitors.  Door knockers are those old metal callers that many doors owned long before doorbells existed.  For centuries it was, without a doubt, a symbol of distinction in such a way that there was a saying in Spanish that said “To such a house such a knocker” referring entirely to terms of social class and power.  The forgers made true masterpieces, giving them different forms depending on the demand made by the owners of the houses for which they were destined.
